Dental Emergencies

BEING PREPARED FOR A DENTAL EMERGENCY IS NO ACCIDENT. KNOWING WHAT TO DO CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAVING AND LOSING A TOOTH. IT TAKES ONLY A FEW MINUTES TO LEARN THE BASICS. Here are some tips

Knocked-Out Tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown, and rinse off the root of the tooth if its dirty. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If it's possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket. If that isn't possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk or water and get to the dentist as quickly as possible. Don't forget to take the tooth with you!

Broken tooth :Rinse your mouth with warm water to keep the area clean. Put cold compresses on your face to reduce swelling. Call up the dental office immediately.

Bitten Tongue or Lip: Clean the area gently with a cloth, and apply cold compresses to keep swelling down. If bleeding doesn't stop, go to a hospital emergency room.

Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out. Use dental floss to remove any food that may be trapped between the teeth. Do not put aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues. See your dentist as soon as possible.

Brushing

Your teeth are covered with a sticky film of bacteria, called plaque. It is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease. Thorough brushing and cleaning between the teeth with floss help remove plaque and food particles from the tooth surface. There are several different brushes available, but whichever you buy and use , take your dentist’s advise. Generally recommended brushes are soft with rounded end bristles and the size and shape should fit your mouth. Worn out brushes cannot clean and do justice and they may on the contrary injure the gums. As soon as the bristles are frayed and wornout one should discard the brush. One should make it a regular habit to clean between the teeth and use of floss is recommeded for this purpose.

Place the tooth brush at angle of 45 degree angle against the gums.

Move the brush back and forth gently in short strokes

Brush the outer , inner tooth surface not forget the chewing/biting surface.

With the toe of the brush clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth using a gentle up and down stroke.

Brush your tongue to remove the accumulations which will remove the bacteria and freshen your breath.

Flossing

Take atleast 12-14 inches of floss and wind it around your index or the middle finger of the right and left hand.

Hold he floss firmly and guide it between your teeth gently.

As soon you manage to take it close to the gumline curve it against the tooth surface an glide it gently between the gum and the tooth.

Gently rub the side of the tooth.

Repeat this on all the teeth
